Community: Cooperstown

Who knew a one-stoplight town could have so much to offer? Cooperstown offers more fun and cultural attractions than you'd expect to find in a picturesque little village. For starters, there's the shrine to one of America's best-loved sports. The world-famous Baseball Hall of Fame displays thousands of artifacts, from uniforms worn by baseball legends to the very balls and bats used during record-breaking feats. During the summer months, you can watch games at historic Doubleday Field, where baseball was “invented.”

Take in Cooperstown's timeless charm on a stroll along the shop-lined lanes. About a mile from the center of town, visit The Farmers' Museum, a recreated 19th-century village, or see The Fenimore Art Museum's renowned folk art collection. You can enjoy acclaimed opera beside the lake at Glimmerglass, described by the London Times as "the most magical of settings."

To refuel, grab a burger at a classic Main Street diner or enjoy a five-course dinner at
The Otesaga Resort, open since 1909. How about some brews? Tours at Brewery Ommegang, a Belgian-style microbrewery, finish with beer tasting and Belgian chocolates.

The internationally renowned Glimmerglass Opera is closely associated with Cooperstown. Founded in 1975, the company originally performed in the auditorium of the Cooperstown High School. In 1987, the opera company relocated to farmland donated by Tom Goodyear of the Cary Mede Estate 8 miles north of the village, where it built the acclaimed Alice Busch Opera Theater, the first American hall built specifically for opera since 1966.
